Committee For Fair Elections

The Committee for Fair Elections led by Betty Castor supports a non-partisan petition for an amendment to the Florida Constitution which would revise the method by which district maps are made in Florida.  The objective is to eliminate the political influence in making district boundaries.  Three amendments would create three changes.  The first amendment makes redistricting the responsibility of an independent commission.  The second amendment establishes the criteria for determining boundaries.  The third amendment requires implementation by 2008.

This is a fundamentally voter-friendly amendment and deserves the support of all who believe that each voter should be heard on election day.  We will be helping to get signatures on the petition.

The timing is crucial.  75,000 valid signatures are required by May 31, 2005, to get the amendment to the next step - judicial review.  Then 750,000 signatures will be required by December 31st to get the proposal on the ballot.

Joe Beausoleil is leading the effort in Lee County.  He has asked us to help.  Lee County has a quota of 2,378 signatures by May 31st.  Bonita Springs needs to get more than a fair share of that to make the goal.  I suspect that we need at least 250 signatures to do our part to meet the goal.

New Information:  I now have 200 copies of the three part petition and single-page summaries on 1) the process, and 2) the contents of the petition.  Call me at 947-6159 regarding your help in this drive.

The petition is in three parts and requires signatures on all three pages.  The summary data is required only once on the top sheet - it will transfer to the 2nd and 3rd sheets.

You can learn more about the drive from the Committee for Fair Elections web site..  Their address is PO Box 10130, Tampa, FL 33679.
