The Ides of March

Katherine Harris Struggles

Katherine Harris went on Sean Hannity on March 15 to reenergize her lagging Senate campaign.  She says she’ll devote her personal inheritance of $10 million to winning in November.  While that’s a big chunk of money, she has tons of baggage to overcome.  Her support from the party is very limited.  Republicans think she would win a contested primary handily.  They have not found anyone to oppose her although other candidates would jump in if she withdrew.  Instead, she just dug in her heels.  Party leaders fear that her candidacy will be a burden to other Republican candidates.  Let’s hope we can prove just how right they are!

Update from SurveyUSA

The March results of the Bush approval/disapproval question were posted March 15 at www.SurveyUSA.com.  Bush’s approval rating here slipped to 36% nationally against 60% disapproval.  Florida gives him 37%.  Only seven states give Bush a net positive approval.  In 37 states disapproval leads approval by more than 10%.  The overall result mirrors other current polls.

The target states should be Ohio, Arkansas, Iowa, Colorado, Missouri, New Mexico, Nevada, Florida and Louisiana – all of which went to Bush in 2004 but now show Bush at a net disapproval over 20%.  Of course, we must always be cautious about poll results.  Some of Bush’s disapproval comes from disappointed conservatives who probably wouldn’t vote for a Democrat on a bet.  The best we can hope for is that they stay home.

You Can’t Win When You’re Afraid of Losing

For some reason or other the D.C. Democrats can’t seem to be able to get their acts together.  It’s as if they were more influenced by the penalty for losing than the rewards for success.  We can’t seem to agree on a message, let alone show the discipline to stay on it.  We have, as Molly Ivins said, three winning issues:  Iraq, Corruption, and Healthcare.  Further, Republicans have demonstrated gross incompetence at governing.  We’re squandering an opportunity.  Time grows short to bring everything together for the 2006 campaign.

Thought for the Day

Success is not counted by how high you have climbed but by how many you brought with you.
