Democrats make presence known at July 4th Parade
|
The Democratic Club of Bonita
Springs and South Lee County were among
the participants in the Annual Bonita Springs 4th of July parade
sponsored by the Bonita Springs Professional Firefighters' Local
3444. This was the 47th year for a 4th of July event in Bonita
Springs.
Martha Simons, with the help of Dave Aronberg, got the loan of a
shiny,
red Ford 150 truck from the Sam Galloway dealership. Martha also
planned the decoration of the vehicle and was its driver. The
highlight of the truck decoration was a Statue of Liberty mounted atop
the cab.
The
club banner preceding the truck was carried by Bill Simons and Susan
Healy.
The truck riders included Mary Ann Kilgannon, Darren
Rumbold, Liz and
Chuck Thiesen, Jean Prokopow, Paul Van Valkenburg, and Jim
Watson. The riders tossed 65 pounds of candy to eager children
(and a few adults) along the route.
Banners on each side of the truck followed the parade theme
"We're
Still Standing For Fairness, Freedom, and Opportunity."
At 10:30 am we reached the end of the route and adjourned to the
park. We had the booth set up to solicit signers for the Fair
Elections Petitions. We were joined in the park by Larry Jackson
and Mary Lou Rotz. Although the spirits were willing, we folded
our tent in the heat shortly after 1 pm. The party went on 'til
2. pm.
While at the park, we were joined by State Senator Dave
Aronberg.
He had first announced his candidacy for office at the same parade
in
2001.
The Grand Prize parade entry was by our friends from the
AmericInn. They built a Mississippi Riverboat for their
entry. Way to go, guys!
One of the events was a pie contest. I'm pleased to report
that
our Martha Simons won 3rd prize in the Fruit Pie division with her
Mango pie!. She has corrected my earlier spice report. The
spice
she used is chat masala,
an Indian blend of spices (including cayenne) that goes well with
fruit. The pie was so tasty that one of the judges immediately
bought the whole pie so there were no samples available!
The end.
